Synergy Aesthetics can prescribe Wegovy (Semaglutide), an effective weekly self-administered injection to help control and achieve a healthy weight.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a once-a-week self-administered injection. It contains the active ingredient Semaglutide and helps to reduce appetite.

How does it work?

Semaglutide, is 94% identical to the naturally occurring hormone (GLP-1) which is produced in the gut after eating. This hormone regulates appetite and insulin secretion. It also slows down the emptying of the stomach so people who take it have a longer sensation of feeling full which, in turn, reduces the amount of food eaten.

What are the benefits?

• Weight loss as part of a calorie-controlled diet with exercise
• Effective and relatively few side effects
• Treatment is administered at home for ease

Does the treatment work effectively?

Wegovy has been studied extensively in multiple clinical trials. Evidence shows that more than twice as many patients achieved 5% and 10% body weight loss compared to diet and exercise alone.

Is the treatment right for me?

Wegovy is only to be used as weight-loss treatment by people who have previously tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. There are also certain medical conditions, such as type 1 diabetes that will mean you aren’t a suitable candidate. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take the drug.

Treatment will only be prescribed following a thorough face to face medical consultation with our Advanced Nurse Practitioner/ Independent Prescriber. This allows for a full medical history to be taken and suitability for the treatment to be assessed.

Is the treatment safe?

Although Wegovy is safe for many people to use, there are links with thyroid cancer that you should be aware of. The drug is approved for use, by both the NHS and FDA but it is not fully understood why some people have the potential to develop these types of cancers. During your consultation, we will need to discuss your medical history and family history to assess if Wegovy is the best treatment for you.

Are there any side effects?

As with all drugs, Wegovy has the potential to cause side effects. When you first start the injections you may experience side effects such as; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and reflux. Therefore the dose is started low and increased gradually – this process helps avoid any of these unwanted effects. Should you experience any of the above side effects our Advanced Nurse Practitioner/INP can prescribe counteracting medications. Treatment will only be prescribed following a thorough face to face medical consultation with our Advanced Nurse Practitioner/ Independent Prescriber. This allows side effects to be discussed in detail and suitability for the treatment to be assessed.

When will I start to see results?

Weight loss results differ from person to person but expect to lose a minimum of 5% of your initial body weight after completing 12 weeks of treatment. We would encourage a healthy diet and regular exercise alongside using Wegovy.

What is the procedure time?

One self-administered injection per week for 4 weeks.

Will the treatment hurt?

No – not any more than any other injection. The injection is delivered into the stomach, you will feel the slight pressure and scratch often associated with an injection. You will be able to resume your normal daily activities immediately.
